Musical synchronicities. Do you ever find yourself walking along with a tune in your head and in a moment of other-worldly clarity you realize you have no idea why that particular piece of music should be coming through your internal sound machine? More over, thinking about the title of the song and maybe even the lyrics, you are astounded at how this seems to be the musical description of what is currently playing out in your own life? Well, it happens to me with wondrous frequency and I love it. Recently I happened upon Peter Gabriel’s ‘Solsbury Hill’, a solo single that the English musician had recorded back in 1976. The song describes Peter’s own spiritual experience atop Little Solsbury Hill in Somerset, England. Now, I’ve listened to Peter’s music for many years and always admired his relentless determination to use his unique talents for good in the world. Recently revisiting this classic Gabriel tune had me sit up and pay attention to the lyrics. This song described so tunefully my own spiritual awakening and the particular path that my life’s journey finds me upon. Obviously not everyone who hears this piece of music will have the same interpretation. For many it will just be a terrific song; and that’s more than enough. Musicians, actors and artists of all kinds can never know completely the Divine mystery that is often infused in the creations they set out into the world. The impact they can have on those who encounter them is never restricted to a particular time frame, but sometimes the familiar is simply experienced in unfamiliar ways. I don’t believe in coincidences. The Universe sends messages of support in terms we alone will understand, as long as we are open and receptive to receiving them. If music is your thing, then talents such as Peter Gabriel could be offering you a lot more than a great song. When we allow ourselves to truly be moved by music, then we can be moved by the messages within as well.
By the way, Peter Gabriel kicked off his i/o Tour in Poland earlier this month and come Fall, he'll be touring North America. See him in Vancouver on October 7th, 2023.

SOLSBURY HILL
Climbing up on Solsbury Hill I could see the city light Wind was blowing, time stood still Eagle flew out of the night He was something to observe Came in close, I heard a voice Standing, stretching every nerve I had to listen, had no choice I did not believe the information Just had to trust imagination My heart going "Boom-boom-boom" "Son", he said "Grab your things, I've come to take you home" To keep in silence I resigned My friends would think I was a nut Turning water into wine Open doors would soon be shut So I went from day to day Though my life was in a rut 'Til I thought of what I'd say Which connection I should cut I was feeling part of the scenery I walked right out of the machinery My heart going "Boom-boom-boom" "Hey", he said "Grab your things, I've come to take you home" Hey, back home When illusion spin her net I'm never where I wanna be And liberty, she pirouette When I think that I am free Watched by empty silhouettes Who close their eyes but still can see No one taught them etiquette I will show another me Today I don't need a replacement I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant My heart going "Boom-boom-boom" "Hey", I said "You can keep my things, they've come to take me home"
